Folsom State Prison: Nonstop High-Volume Use

At one of California's largest and most active prison gyms — referred to by staff as “the most used gym in America” — Folsom State Prison's 16 Apollo Multigym units and the Everest Cardio Climber from Outdoor-Fit are in use for 15 to 20 hours every day. These tamperproof, weatherproof multigyms are built for exactly this kind of high-volume, unsupervised use in a secure facility environment.

Folsom State Prison, part of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR), is a medium-security facility in Represa, California with a design capacity of roughly 2,065. Opened in 1880, it is the state's second-oldest prison and the first in the United States to have electricity — a historic institution where durable, low-maintenance outdoor fitness equipment is an important part of a long-established recreation yard.

The Solution

Apollo Multigyms and Everest Cardio, Built for Constant Use

With one of the busiest prison gyms in the country, Folsom needed strength equipment that could run 15 to 20 hours a day without failing. Outdoor-Fit supplied 16 Apollo Multigym units and an Everest Cardio Climber — designed for high-volume, unsupervised use in secure environments.

Apollo Multigym

Apollo Multigym is an eight-station correctional multigym for five users and 75+ exercises, pairing bodyweight stations (chin/dip bars with assist, plyo box, back extension, knee raise, calf-raise step) with a high/low pulley and a 100 lb selectorized stack adjustable 10-100 lb. The pop-pin rides in a security track; staff can lock or disable it. ADA-accessible.

Everest Cardio Climber

Everest Cardio Climber is a single-user, cadence-powered stair climber offering strength- or cardio-focused modes with no electronics or external resistance, so intensity is set by the user's stroke and pace. Developed with the Kinesiology department at Dalhousie University for biomechanically sound movement; tamperproof and weather-resistant for high-frequency use.

Frequently Asked Questions About Outdoor-Fit Correctional Exercise Equipment

Yes. Outdoor-Fit correctional exercise equipment is built from weather-resistant, powder-coated steel with UV-stable finishes for year-round outdoor use, and carry a 25-year warranty. Folsom's yard sees heavy daily use, and the equipment is engineered for exactly that kind of high-heat, high-traffic environment.

The Apollo Multigym is engineered for decades of high-frequency institutional service. Replacing loose plates and bars with fixed, enclosed stations removes the parts that wear out or go missing, so 16 units can run 15–20 hours a day with only routine inspection of the pulleys and hardware.

By replacing loose plates and bars with fixed, enclosed stations, there are no free weights to conceal or repurpose. Selectorized stacks stay in a security track and can be locked by staff.

A 25-year structural warranty covers the powder-coated structural steel and aluminum, welds, and hardware. Wear items on mechanical units — cables and pulleys — are covered for 2 years; because these are designed to be replaced with normal use, routine replacement is expected maintenance rather than a warranty claim.
